Jogja or Solo 'paes'? Here's the difference

If you more into 'Javanese'-style wedding concept, then one of the elements that you need to make sure is the bride's makeup. FYI, commonly 'Javanese' wedding divided into two characteristics, one is Jogja 'paes' and the other is Solo 'paes'. What are those?

According to Indonesia.go.id, the term 'paes' means beautifying a bride's forehead, which includes beautifying eyebrows and eyes, cleaning fine hair on the forehead, and so on. Paes Yogya is divided into six types, namely Paes Ageng, Paes Ageng Don't Menir, Paes Ageng Kanigaran, Yogya Puteri, Ksatriyan Ageng, and Pakualaman Temple. While Solo Paes are divided into five types, namely Solo Basahan, Princess Solo, Langenharjan Solo, Taqwa Solo, and Mangkunegaran Solo.

Patterns of makeup or ‘paes’ Yogya and Solo both consist of four parts, namely the stump or curl, tongs, dropper, and godheg. Stumps or ossicles are patterns that are located in the middle of the forehead. Yogya's makeup pattern is shaped like a betel leaf cut and named penunggul, while the Solo makeup pattern is shaped like a half-round tip of a duck's egg and is named as a curl. On the left and right side of the stump or gajal, there is a spiky form of makeup known as a clamp. 

There are no differences in the shape of the clamp in the two Yogya and Solo makeup patterns. Next to the clamp, there is a makeup called dropper. Drops in Yogya ‘paes’ are shaped like betel leaves with smaller dimensions than the stumps. While in Solo, dropper is shaped like a half-round egg. On the forehead that follows the sideburn, there is a makeup named godheg. Godheg on Paes Yogya is shaped like a knife-edge, while Godheg on Paes Solo is shaped like a turi bud.

Another difference between the two palace makeup patterns is the use of gold powder (prada) and outward material (pidih or lotha). Paes Ageng Do Menir and Paes Ageng Kanigaran Yogya use prada on the edge of paes. Whereas all types of Solo paes do not use prada, but Solo Basahan uses white speech and Solo Puteri uses black lotha.
